Mr. Toads Wild Ride

The trailhead is at an elevation of 7200 feet and the ride begins with a tortuous 1700 vertical foot climb along the Tahoe Rim Trail to the real beginning of Toads. The descent into South Lake Tahoe is highly technical and dangerous with drops up to 6 feet and evolves into a wild roller coaster ride near the bottom with sweeping bank turns. If you can handle the upper portion, you're going to love it!

Many people ride this one way with a shuttle from South Lake Tahoe back to the trailhead. This cheat cuts out the 6 ½ mile climb back to your car where the real suffering occurs. If I catch you taking the easy way back, be prepared to take some abuse. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is a truly unforgettable mountain bike trail. If you want to live to tell about it, ride only what you can ride.

Thanks to Randy Hanson for providing this track!

Salmon Falls

Salmon Falls is a popular mountain bike trail along the south arm of Folsom Lake northeast of the infamous Folsom Prison. Beginning at the Salmon Falls bridge, the singletrack extends from the trail head almost all the way out to Rattlesnake Peninsula.

In the spring time, the ride is spectacular. The trail holds up pretty well in our wet winters, but the water crossings can get dicey. If you give it a go in the summer, get out there as early as you can to beat the heat; you're exposed to the sun and the manzanita will hold in the stifling heat. Bring LOTS of water and stop at the peninsula to cool off in the lake before your return.

Mickey Mouse

This loop is a variation of the Salmon Falls mountain bike trail. You'll begin at the same place, i.e., the Salmon Falls bridge and traverse the singletrack which winds along the north shore of the south arm of Folsom Lake until you come to the Flagstaff Hill trailhead.

It's not really a trailhead and few people even know the name of the hill, but I've marked a waypoint here so there won't be any ambiguity. At this waypoint, split off from the main singletrack trail to begin the fire road climb to the top of Flagstaff hill. The climb is steep enough to keep you breathing and there are enough rocks to keep your attention all the way to the top. As long as you dodge the rattlesnakes, you'll be just fine.

The top of the climb is marked by the ruins of a Fiat X-19. Now for the fun. The Mickey Mouse trailhead is about 15 yards north of the carcass; it's not obvious, just a little break in the manzanita. This spot was marked for years by a Mickey Mouse doll from whence the trail derived its name. The doll is gone now but you have my waypoint! There is lots of broken glass for the first few yards, I carry my bike and then remount when the trail widens enough to ride without ripping my legs on the manzanita.

The trail is steep, narrow, rocky and very, very technical; tight switchbacks and drops make it even more dangerous (fun). This is a mountain bike trail which should NOT be attempted by inexperience riders! You'll drop 500 vertical feet and climb another 300 before completing your descent back down to the Flagstaff Hill grade. Downhill to the Salmon Falls Trail and back to your rig.

Thanks to Randy Hanson for providing this track!

Folsom Dike 8

The Dike 8 is not a well known mountain bike trail as it was off limits to the fat tire crowd for many years. The trail starts out relatively easy on the Folsom end but gets progressively more difficult as you go along. You can do this ride as an out and back along Folsom Lake, but I prefer to ride along the lake on the way out and come back on Salmon Falls road. This allows me to traverse more miles of unique single track in a given amount of time.

In mid-summer, your legs may get a few star thistle scratches and you'll have to watch out for some poison oak and the occasional rattlesnake, but this trail can be ridden year around.

If this trail isn't enough mileage for you, I'm including a 0.8 mile tie track to the entrance to Sweetwater Basin Wildlife Area and the corresponding trailhead to the 2.7 mile long Sweetwater Trail in the GPS data files.

Clementine Loop Mountain Bike Trail

I consider the Clementine Loop to be my "home trail". The loop is actually a collage of six mountain bike trails in the Auburn area all linked together. Park your outfit at the Stagecoach Trailhead parking lot. You'll end your ride here after climbing up the old stagecoach route but you won't be going down that way. Coast down the road to the beginning of the Manzanita Trail.

This fun, technical singletrack winds through the manzanita and merges onto the Stagecoach Trail about a third of the way down to the confluence. There are several dangerous water crossings — failure can result in a 10 foot fall or worse. Several of my friends have been injured here. If you are unsure, walk your bike and live to ride another day.

The lower part of Stagecoach is fast, albeit a bit bumpy, two track. The speed limit is 15 mph and I hear they've been cracking down on speeders do to the prevalence of hikers, runners and their dogs. If you are an expert rider, you can bypass the lower third of Stagecoach by using Tinker's Cutoff which begins at the 15 mph speed limit sign. Tinker's Cutoff, a.k.a., the Crazy Trail, is currently closed for restoration. I will include a track for it in the GPS data files once it is reopened.

Next, ride the Clementine Trail upstream along the North Fork of the American River before you begin your climb up above Lake Clementine to the start of the Culvert Trail at the green gate. You've got a bit more climbing left and followed by adrenaline packed singletrack back down to the Confluence Trail which continues the excitement along the Middle Fork all the way to the confluence of the middle and north forks of the American river. Woohoo!!

You've got the Stagecoach climb yet but who cares after that!

Thanks to Randy Hanson for providing this track!

Foresthill Divide Mountain Bike Trail

This trail consists mainly of fast, relatively easy single track which rolls through foothill oaks. It's a great speed workout because you can sprint up the hills and recover on the backsides. There are a few tricky spots including seasonal water crossings and a couple of short steeps which earn it the + rating. However, I've taken complete beginners out here who did very well by simply walking the tough spots.

Be careful on the downhills though, the trail is deceptively fast and some of the turns are off camber. Everyone I know who rides it regularly has crashed at one time or another. You must also be ready for hikers, horses and dogs around every bend as this is a multi-use trail that gets lots of traffic on the weekend. If you can make it out early in the morning during the week, you'll only have to share the trail with deer, turkey, bobcats and the occasional mountain lion.

Vertical
In a word - huge. Over 1,200m / 4,800ft

Trails
Over 200km of lift-serviced gravity fed, adrenaline fueled descending trails. Something for every level of rider. Gentle, banked cruisers through the Coastal forest. Tight and twisty single track - perfect for intermediate riders. For the armour clad, full face wearing, 50lb. bike group there are steep rock faces, gnarly, root strewn lines, drop offs of all descriptions and more.

3 Skills Centres: each designed for a different ability level.

The green skills centre is built close to the ground for riders just learning to clear obstacles and ride planks.
The blue zone increases the difficulty by raising, narrowing and tightening all of the constructed elements.
The double black skills centre is for expert riders only including a dazzling display of North Shore-style obstacles.

BikerCross Course

Take it fast, take it slow. Huge banked corners, rhythm sections, table tops, doubles - the closest thing to flying on two wheels.
